This is the family genealogy site of Alec James.

I started my genealogy research 12 years ago before much of the information was available on the internet. I spent many hours looking at microfiche and films noting down anything that seemed relevant and then working with the data trying to see where it fitted into my tree. My first 3 years work could probably be done now in a long weekend with the data such as parish records and censuses that are available on line.

My James family line is mainly in Staffordshire but I was born in Widnes (then Lancashire now Cheshire) but I have followed various other surnames and my tree now contains nearly three thousand individuals.

I use Family Tree Maker (currently version 16) software on my computer to record all the details. This site was created by exporting the data to a GEDCOM file and then I used GEDHTree software to convert the data to the HTM pages that you will see on my site. The software created various indexes to help navigate the site.

Here are some useful links that I used when searching my tree: -

Family Search Internet - Parish records and census data

Free BMD - birth, marriage and death records

Genes Connected - like Friends Reunited. Well worth publishing your data so that others can contact you.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission - Recrods of those that died in major wars

GEN UK - Various data on a county by county basis
